Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need an investment advisor?

If you do not have the time, desire or discipline to conduct ongoing investment research, you should work with a professional advisor. If however, you enjoy researching stocks and funds, managing your own portfolio, and are satisfied with your returns, you may not need the services of an investment professional.

What are the benefits of using an investment advisor?

When you work with an investment advisor, you put professionals in charge of your investments. Decisions about what investments to make are made on your behalf through research and analysis to help you achieve your personal goals. By working with a competent investment advisor you benefit from their professional expertise. Some advisors focus on a specific investment style while others are broader in their approach. In either case, an investment advisor can help structure your portfolio to meet your specific investment needs and goals by investing in securities that have been thoroughly researched and analyzed. An investment advisor can also relieve you of burdens of trying to manage a portfolio on your own and can give you the peace of mind knowing someone is overseeing your hard-earned assets while you focus on doing the things you enjoy most. Finally, a good investment advisor will get to know you and your needs, and provide you with personal attention and guidance through good and bad times. They will make sure your retirement plan and income needs are being properly taken care of and will take care of your heirs when you are no longer able to do so.

What is your investment philosophy and process?

At Betro | Mileszko & Company, our investment philosophy can best be summarized by the following:

  1. We take a long-term view of investing and will not speculate on short-term fluctuations.
  2. We will rely on diversification to safeguard our clients’ assets and control risk.
  3. We will remain flexible in terms of asset allocation to take advantage of opportunities.
  4. We will seek to control investment costs to maximize our clients’ wealth.
  5. We will approach each and every decision with the understanding that our clients’ interests come first.

Our Investment Process is summarized in the following five steps:

  1. Identify Your Investment Goals and Risk Tolerance.
  2. Evaluate Market and Economic Conditions.
  3. Determine Asset Allocation Strategy.
  4. Allocate to Desired Funds.
  5. Monitor and Rebalance.

Why do you specialize in no-load mutual funds?

We specialize in mutual funds for several important reasons. First, mutual funds offer flexibility, diversification, and professional management by some of the best and most successful managers in the industry. Second, they provide access to a full array of low-cost funds that can be purchased without sales commissions. As an advisor that is focused on controlling costs for our clients, this is very appealing. Finally, mutual funds, unlike private equity investments and hedge funds, provide liquidity for investors which allows them access to their capital quickly and efficiently.

Why do you prefer index and Exchange Traded Funds?

Numerous academic studies and real world experience have proven time and again that most actively managed funds fail to outperform their index benchmark over time because of higher expenses, manager error and taxes. That’s why many of the world’s largest institutional and endowment funds index large portions of their portfolio assets. At Betro | Mileszko & Company, our primary goal is to protect and grow our clients’ wealth. We believe the most effective way to achieve that goal is to control expenses and reduce taxes while prudently diversifying our clients’ assets. Index funds and Exchange Traded Funds are ideal instruments to help us accomplish this.
